Choosing office furniture

Furniture Life Cycle

Office furniture creates environmental costs in its manufacture and disposal.

In North America, over 80% of office furniture is simply dumped at the end of its life cycle. That equates to hundreds of millions of dollars spent on landfill fees, and carting expenses by US companies to dispose of furniture that’s reached end-of-life.

After it reaches a landfill, decomposition creates greenhouse gas (Methane) -as well as other toxic particulates that leach into soil and water supplies.

Often cheap construction may extensively use volatile organic compounds (VOC) in paints, glues and stains. Choosing VOC alternatives can offer a solution, i.e. water or, powder based finishes.

Another way to be more environmentally friendly is to explore recycled content raw materials and fabrics used in the manufacturing process or, the right type of wood and stain. The transportation of foreign lumber for example generates a large carbon footprint and it’s estimated that by 2020 shipping will generate more Nitrous and Sulphur oxides than all land based activity.
